Rewind: Jonathan Snowden Discusses 'CM Punk' Signing

The UFC signing of CM Punk has yet again stoked discussion of the appropriateness of the world's top fighting organization embracing a pro wrestler with star power upside but little to nothing in the way of fight resume.

But while the signing seem very of-the-moment and circumstantial, it places Punk within a rich tradition of pro wrestlers placing a high premium on proving they are legitimate tough guys, and the financial rewards that can engender.

This week on the Sherdog Radio Network "Rewind," host Jack Encarnacao welcomes Jonathan Snowden, MMA scribe and author of "Shooters" The Toughest Men in Professional Wrestling," a look at the legitimate fighting chops the bulk of pro wrestlers felt obligated to carry until quite recently, and the surprising amount common DNA between what wrestlers drilled to be able to protect themselves and their business if things didn't go according to plan, and the displays that motivated MMA pioneers like the Gracies.
