Weekend Rundown: Leg Injury Forces Bob Sapp to Submit to James Thompson in India

In a word: anticlimactic.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Bob Sapp submitted to a leg injury against James Thompson in a showdown between Pride Fighting Championships veterans at Super Fight League 1 on Sunday at the Andheri Sports Complex in Mumbai, India. Sapp (11-11) tapped out 1:52 into round one, as he lost for the eighth time in nine fights.

Thompson, as has become his trademark, charged out of his corner to meet Sapp and scored with a takedown inside the first half minute. Ground-and-pound followed. Sapp then reversed into top position and landed some punches in response, but success proved fleeting. Thompson sprang a reversal of his own, twisting Sapp’s leg in the process. In obvious pain, the 38-year-old American submitted immediately.

Meanwhile, Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Xavier Foupa-Pokam opened a cut on Joey Guel’s forehead and forced a doctor’s stoppage between rounds one and two, as he put the brakes on a five-fight losing streak. Foupa-Pokam (22-17) has a 2-6 record since being released by the UFC following consecutive defeats to Denis Kang and Drew McFedries in 2009.

Other winners at Super Fight League 1 included Serbian export Sanja Sucevic (second-round rear-naked choke submission over Lena Ovchynnikova) and Jimmy Ambriz (first-round technical knockout over Satish Jamia). The victory halted a four-bout drought for Ambriz, a World Extreme Cagefighting veteran who had not won since December 2010.
