By the Numbers: UFC on ESPN 56

Derrick Lewis got back to doing what he does best at UFC on ESPN 56.

After testing out his grappling and clinch work for a couple of rounds, “The Black Beast” added to his knockout record, putting away Rodrigo Nascimento 49 seconds into Round 3 of Saturday’s headliner at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. While he may never capture UFC gold, Lewis remains one of the Las Vegas-based promotion’s most entertaining attractions — both in the cage and on the microphone.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC on ESPN 56, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

15: KO/TKO victories for Lewis, the most in UFC history. That figure also ties him with Dustin Poirier and Matt Brown for fourth-most finishes all-time in the promotion.

10: Career knockdowns for Lewis, tying him with Andrei Arlovski, Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem for the second most in heavyweight history behind only Junior dos Santos (14). Lewis floored Nascimento in the third frame en route to securing the finish.

41: Significant strikes for Lewis, a total that included 13 in the clinch and 13 on the ground. Nascimento landed 27 significant strikes in defeat.

55: Significant strikes by which Joaquin Buckley outlanded Nursulton Ruziboev in the evening’s welterweight co-main event. Buckley did his best work in Round 3, racking up a 64-to-16 advantage and scoring the fight’s only knockdown.

4: Takedowns landed in four attempts for Buckley, the second most of his 13-bout UFC tenure. “New Mansa” also racked up 5:30 of control time and outlanded Ruziboev 71-7 in significant ground strikes.

0:12: Time of Carlos Ulberg’s first-round knockout of Alonzo Menifield. That’s the third fastest finish in UFC light heavyweight history behind Ryan Jimmo (0:07) and James Irvin (0:08).

5: Consecutive finishes for Ulberg, tying him with Joanderson Brito for the second-longest active streak in the UFC behind only welterweight contender Shavkat Rakhmonov (six).

6: Straight victories in UFC competition for Ulberg, the longest active winning streak in the light heavyweight division.

4:51: Time of Diego Ferreira’s third-round technical knockout win against Mateusz Rebecki, making it the seventh latest stoppage in UFC lightweight history.

123: Significant strikes landed by Ferreira, the most of his 15-bout promotional tenure. His previous best of 109 came in a decision win against Mairbek Taisumov at UFC 242. By comparison, Rebecki landed 52 significant strikes.

80: Significant strike advantage for Ferreira over the bout’s final 10 minutes. This included a whopping 62-to-6 edge in Round 3 before the finish arrived. Rebecki outlanded Ferreira 30 to 21 in Round 1 while scoring the fight’s lone knockdown.

11: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 14 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that scored the featherweight bout between Alex Caceres and Sean Woodson in favor of Caceres. The three cageside judges saw things differently, as Woodson emerged with a unanimous decision triumph in front of his hometown fans.

101: Significant strikes landed by Woodson. By comparison, Caceres landed 82. Woodson outlanded his foe 31 to 18 in Round 1 and 39 to 32 in Round 3, while Caceres enjoyed a 32-to-31 advantage in Round 2.

12: Fighters in UFC history with six hours or more of Octagon time. Caceres joined this group during the third round of his bout against Woodson. Caceres’ 6:00:46 of total Octagon time ranks seventh among active UFC fighters.

3: Takedowns landed in four attempts for Waldo Cortes-Acosta in a unanimous decision triumph over Robelis Despaigne at heavyweight. Those are the first three takedowns landed by “Salsa Boy” in his six-bout UFC tenure.

37: Significant ground strikes for Cortes-Acosta. Despaigne, meanwhile, failed to land a single significant strike on the ground. Cortes-Acosta also held a 130-to-28 edge in total strikes landed while securing 9:49 of control time.

127: Total strike advantage for Chase Hooper in a second-round submission victory against Viacheslav Borshchev in a lightweight contest. Hooper also held a 62-to-2 edge in significant strikes and logged 6:03 of control time before the bout was halted at the 3:00 mark of Round 2.

1: Knockdown in nine UFC appearances for Hooper, who floored an opponent for the first time in the opening stanza of his fight against Borschchev.

4: Professional victories inside of 40 seconds for Esteban Ribovics, who starched Terrance McKinney with a head kick 37 seconds into the opening round of their lightweight bout. The Argentina native has finished 12 of his 13 career triumphs overall inside the distance.

6-1: Career record for Tabatha Ricci in bouts that go the distance. Ricci took a hard-fought split verdict against the returning Tecia Pennington (formerly Torres) in a preliminary strawweight contest.

80: Significant strikes landed by Pennington. By comparison, Ricci landed 54. Ricci did hold a 94-to-92 edge in total strikes and logged 5:15 of control time while landing just one of 10 takedown attempts.

212: Combined significant strikes landed by Billy Goff (116) and Trey Waters (96) in their welterweight bout. While Goff had the edge in volume, Waters landed the heavier shots, which resulted in a unanimous decision triumph. Waters also stuffed 11 of his opponent’s 12 takedown attempts.

11: Takedowns successfully defended — in 11 attempts — by Charles Johnson in a unanimous decision victory over Jake Hadley at flyweight. The St. Louis native also held a 70-to-48 edge in significant strikes landed as he secured his second consecutive UFC triumph.
