CASE FOR: One of the most entertaining submission experts in MMA history, Aoki has defeated opponents with all manner of holds during a period when submissions have become less prevalent. The Shooto, Dream and One Fighting Championship titleholder is one of Japan’s all-time best fighters and a memorable figure for his distinct style. CASE AGAINST: However, Aoki was given more than his fair share of cupcakes over the years, and he struggled mightily against some of his tougher opponents like Gilbert Melendez, Eddie Alvarez and Hayato Sakurai. While he was a star for most of his career, he did not sell tickets or move ratings like Yoshihiro Akiyama or Norifumi Yamamoto in the post-Pride Fighting Championships period.
