Light Heavyweights

Thiago Silva (14-3, 5-3 UFC) vs. Rafael Cavalcante (11-3, 0-0 UFC)

The Matchup: For the second time in three fights, Silva had a victory changed to a no contest, this time after testing positive for marijuana metabolites following his UFC on Fuel TV 6 bout with Stanislav Nedkov. Previously, the Brazilian had a UFC 125 triumph over Brandon Vera overturned when he submitted an altered urine sample for a post-fight drug test.

Cavalcante, meanwhile, has faced similar issues. “Feijao” failed a post-fight drug screen after submitting Mike Kyle in 33 seconds at Strikeforce “Barnett vs. Cormier” and was fined and suspended for a year as a result. A former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, Cavalcante won four of his seven bouts with the now-defunct promotion.

With 21 finishes via knockout or technical knockout between these two, the potential for a slugfest appears to be great. Cavalcante has battled conditioning issues in the past, however, and Silva could have the advantage if he can drag his countryman into deep waters. After struggling for two frames in the clinch against Nedkov, Silva took advantage of his opponent’s fatigue in round three to get the submission.

Cavalcante is a better striker than Nedkov, but his tendency to press the action falls right into Silva’s wheelhouse. While Cavalcante has struggled to control distance in the past, Silva prefers to utilize a bullying style in close quarters, where he can land punishing, short strikes.

Silva should have no trouble getting inside against Cavalcante, but he must be wary of his foe’s dangerous knees in the clinch. As the fight progresses, look for Silva to impose his will through takedowns and positioning. While both men own Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts, Silva is more likely to seek out a ground battle, and he is diligent in looking to pass guard when on the mat.

The Pick: After some spirited exchanges, Silva is able to wear down Cavalcante with takedowns and ground-and-pound, winning by decision or late TKO.
