Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White has sensationally ended any hopes of a fight between former lightweight champions Conor McGregor and Frankie Edgar, citing the weight differences between the pair as the major sticking point.

Social media was a buzz yesterday when McGregor announced on Twitter that he was down to fight Edgar in December and asked White to make it happen, even offering up his fight purse to charity.

Edgar, who has said on multiple occasions he wanted to fight the Irishman, accepted McGregor’s latest offer.

The potential fight was short-lived though as White told the Boston Herald that it wouldn’t go ahead, claiming Edgar is too small for McGregor (via MMAJunkie.com).

“I said it leading into the Mayweather fight: ‘He may never fight again after this fight when you make this kind of money,” White said. “He’s fought once since then.

“Conor loves to fight and wants to fight again, but the Frankie Edgar fight isn’t going to happen.

“Edgar is two weight classes below him,” White said. “(Edgar) was supposed to fight Aljamain Sterling. Aljamain fell out and got hurt. Frankie is coming to the end of his career, and he could end up getting himself into a title position again. To take the Conor fight makes no sense.”

McGregor hasn’t fought since his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov back in October 2018 at UFC 229, while Edgar recently lost his title fight against featherweight kingpin Max Holloway in July at UFC 240 before suggesting he may move down a weight division to compete with fighters his own size.
