MM-Eh! News and Notes from Canada

This week MM-Eh! catches up with Joe Doerksen (Pictures), Ivan Salaverry (Pictures), David "The Crow" Loiseau, and Blake Fredrickson (Pictures). We also take a quick look at Xtreme Cage Warz, the lone fight card in Canada this coming weekend.

Joe Doerksen (Pictures) Update

Although he has yet to appear on a PRIDE card since signing last November, perennial fan favorite Joe Doerksen (Pictures) has been anything but idle, most recently garnering a submission victory in April over Dae Won Kim (Pictures) at DEEP 29.

"El Dirte" told MM-Eh! that he's currently in Utah for a two-week stint to help Jeremy Horn (Pictures) prepare for an upcoming fight. After that he'll be heading home to Winnipeg to fight Emerson Nunes (da Silva) on May 25 at Colosseum V, a combined MMA, boxing, and Muay Thai card.

When asked about his status with PRIDE after its recent acquisition by the UFC, Doerksen replied, "Don't know if the UFC thing affects my current contract too much, and I'm not sure what the UFC has planned for me. Not sure it matters to me, as long as I get to fight. I will fight under UFC rules, so I will fight at 185 instead of 183. Good times. And yes, two pounds does make a difference."

Salaverry on UFC 71 card

The UFC has announced the pairing of Ivan Salaverry (Pictures) vs. Terry Martin (Pictures) on May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Owner of a 3-2 record in the UFC, Salaverry has had a spotty relationship with the promoter, particularly after being let go after his decision loss to Nathan Marquardt (Pictures) in 2005. The middleweight's sole bout since parting ways with the UFC came after he joined the now defunct World Fighting Alliance for its lone card last July, a bloody victory over Art Santore (Pictures).

The Snake gets bitten

During his match with James Birdsley at Sportfight 19 "Cinqo de Mayhem," Revolution Fight Team's Blake "The Snake" Fredrickson probably never expected for his fight to end the way it did.

According to Kelly Crigger's account of the fight for Sherdog.com:
Round three starts off with Birdsley getting a quick takedown and before inexplicably spitting his mouthpiece out, theoretically for what he was about to do. From underneath, Fredrickson caught Birdsley in an armbar, but instead of tapping, Birdsley decided to take a page out of Mike Tyson's playbook and sinks his teeth into Fredrickson's thigh, causing immediate bleeding.

Maybe Blake should change his name to Evander? All kidding aside, obviously Birdsley was disqualified for his actions, but I'm sure Fredrickson would rather have had the submission win.

The Crow in Art of War

David Loiseau (Pictures) is scheduled to meet Freddie Espiricueta (Pictures) this Friday night at Art of War 2, at the Austin Convention Centre in Austin, Texas.

"The Crow" was last seen at the inaugural EliteXC event in February, a disappointing decision loss to Joey Villasenor (Pictures). Loiseau then asked permission to seek out fights in other promotions, and EliteXC allowed it, although they still have options on him.

Although he hasn't been announced as fighting on the June 22 EliteXC co-promotion with Strikeforce, that will still be a month and a half away so it's possible, though not likely, that Loiseau may be added.

Xtreme Cage Warz

The Prairieland Exhibition in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, plays host this weekend to the sole Canadian event this week, Xtreme Cage Warz "Night of Thunder." Special guest will be former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes (Pictures), who will also be conducting a seminar on the following Sunday.

Hughes seems to be spending a lot of time up in Canada lately, and with his upcoming coaching duties for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter, this may be an opportunity for fighters to showcase their skills and try to prove that they should be there with him.
