5. Kazushi Sakuraba

Widely regarded as the greatest Japanese fighter to ever live, Sakuraba epitomized courage and determination. He regularly found himself in the ring opposite much larger opponents, but it never deterred him from pursuing victory at all costs. Sakuraba’s skill and undying will made him a larger-than-life figure in the Land of the Rising Sun, where he was a centerpiece of the Pride Fighting Championships organization.

Sakuraba owns wins over Vitor Belfort, Carlos Newton, Quinton Jackson, Ken Shamrock and many others, but it was his rivalry with MMA’s First Family -- he defeated Royce Gracie, Renzo Gracie, Royler Gracie and Ryan Gracie -- that made him a household name. He battled through various injuries and suffered his share of heartbreaking losses, only to emerge better than before. The high regard in which he is held by fans remains strong to this day. In terms of warrior spirit, no one surpassed Sakuraba.
