6. Pablo Garza vs. Fredson Paixao

Not much was expected from the featherweight confrontation between Garza and Paixao at the Palms Casino resort, but it gave rise to one of the most frightening knockouts in UFC history. Aptly nicknamed “The Scarecrow,” the gangly 6-foot-1 Garza towered over much of his opposition at 145 pounds and was making his organizational debut on the heels of a submission loss to Tiequan Zhang in World Extreme Cagefighting two months earlier. Paixao, who stands 5-foot-6, was a highly decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt with wins over Bryan Caraway, Masakazu Imanari and Rani Yahya, all by decision. Less than a minute into the fight, Paixao shot for an ill-advised takedown and was met with a booming flying knee. He crashed to the canvas stiff and unconscious, his eyes open but nobody home. Referee Steve Mazzaggatti jumped in to save the Brazilian from further damage 51 seconds into Round 1.
