Only one man has defeated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez: Mayweather. The two met for the WBA, WBC and The Ring light middleweight titles on Sept. 14, 2013 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, with “Money” walking away as a majority decision winner. Scores were 114-114, 116-112 and 117-111. Most observers did not feel it was as close as the scorecards indicated. Mayweather connected with nearly 100 more jabs than Alvarez and outlanded him by a 232-117 clip in total punches. Alvarez, 23 at the time, found the mark with only 22 percent of the 526 punches he threw. In improving to 44-0, Mayweather turned away one of the sport’s young lions. Alvarez has since gone on to defeat Alfredo Angulo, Erislandy Lara, James Kirkland, Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan, Liam Smith and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in succession, reaffirming his place as one of boxing’s pound-for-pound best.
