7. Mark Kerr vs. Sidney Goncalves Freitas
World Vale Tudo Championship 3
Jan. 19, 1997 | Sao Paulo, Brazil

Before Kerr arrived in the UFC, he burst on the scene inside the World Vale Tudo Championship down in Brazil. He took on Freitas in the semifinals of a same-day tournament he eventually won. However, his path to the top was not without some strange occurrences.

Per the norm of his salad days, Kerr took down Freitas quickly and dominated him on the mat. Freitas had no answer for “The Smashing Machine” and, after getting mauled for two minutes, decided to shrimp away and exit the ring a fast as he could. He ate two punches on the way out and was disqualified because he refused to re-enter the ring.

Kerr went on to get a chin-to-the-eye submission against Dan Bobish at UFC 14 and later won a fight via DQ against Branko Cikatic, who continuously grabbed the ropes during their encounter under the Pride Fighting Championships banner. Bizarre endings became almost commonplace for him.
