The first of two meetings between Coleman and Rua featured more violence after the fight was over. The bout ended shortly after it started, as the action spilled onto the mat; after a brief scramble, Rua’s arm was caught underneath him, causing an ugly elbow dislocation.

As the referee tried to grab Coleman’s leg to keep him from continuing to fight, the Brazilian’s corner charged in to check on the injured competitor. “The Hammer” took issue with the men entering the ring and took it as a show as disrespect, leading to a brawl between supporters. Rua required surgery to repair ligament damage to his elbow.

“Shogun” exacted some revenge three years later in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, as he scored a third-round technical knockout at UFC 93 in Dublin, Ireland.
