Browne put away the former title contender with a series of first-round elbows from the clinch in their featured heavyweight battle at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Gonzaga met his end 71 seconds into Round 1, his forward progress halted by the most violent of volleys. Gonzaga dodged a head kick, moved immediately to the clinch and pressed “Hapa” into the fence. However, in his haste to secure a takedown, the Brazilian left his head exposed, and Browne took advantage. A burst of elbows to the side of the head crumpled Gonzaga, who fell limp at Browne’s feet before a crowd of 5,918. With that, clinch elbows in defense of a takedown became a signature piece in the Hawaiian’s repertoire.
