Undefeated light heavyweights are almost always greeted by the UFC with open arms, but Nedkov looks to be the exception to that rule. Despite holding a flawless record, he has much to prove against Cantwell, a reliable barometer in the 205-pound class.

Little mystery surrounds Nedkov. He often dives for takedowns and rides it out until the final bell, an approach that has served him well against average competition. However, it seems hard to envision him finding success against Cantwell’s versatile offensive attack.

Granted, wrestling has been a bane for Cantwell in the past, but he has credible strikes and grappling skills that more than make up the gap. More than anything, the fight depends on his ability, or lack thereof, to stuff takedowns or work an offensive guard. Odds are in his favor since Nedkov’s lack of offensive firepower invites opponents to go for broke since they have less to fear in return.

Furthermore, Nedkov lacks the kind of top control he needs to excel at this level, and he has a tendency to make mistakes, like posting his arms and digging in for takedowns that leave his neck exposed. Such careless errors do not go unpunished in the UFC, and Cantwell’s underrated grappling chops only makes Nedkov’s path to victory more treacherous.

Regardless of how many takedowns Nedkov hits, he will eventually work himself into a submission. Think second round, as Cantwell shows off the same finishing skills he showed off against Razak Al-Hassan.
