Those who doubted Silva’s legitimacy as middleweight champion pointed to Marquardt’s experience and well-rounded skills as genuine threats to the Brazilian’s reign. They could not have been more wrong. Marquardt appeared to chart a successful course at ARCO Arena, as he took down “The Spider” in the first round and managed to steer clear of danger. However, he did not stay busy enough on the ground, resulting in a restart from referee John McCarthy with 90 seconds to go in the frame. Silva sprawled on and countered a second takedown attempt from the former Pancrase champion, moved on top and delivered a devastating standing-to-ground right hand that split the Wyoming native’s defenses. Marquardt turtled, failed to protect himself from the punches that followed and bowed out 4:50 into Round 1.
