9. Helio Gracie

Some might scoff at the idea of the Gracie grandmaster being mentioned as one of the top 10 Brazilians ever in MMA because he never officially fought in traditional mixed martial arts matches. However, his legacy is defined by the fact that he, along with brother Carlos Gracie, created Gracie Jiu-Jitsu -- one of the foundations of the sport.

A sixth dan in judo, as well, Gracie became a living legend in Brazil in the 1950s after engaging in notorious battles with wrestlers, boxers and judokas from across the globe. He did not always win, but his small frame and unbreakable will made him a national hero. Gracie was father to the undefeated Rickson Gracie, UFC co-founder Rorion Gracie, UFC hall of famer Royce Gracie and Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champions Relson Gracie and Royler Gracie.
