Q&A: Serra Talks St. Pierre

GSP's approach

Sherdog.com: Any feeling on how he's going to approach the fight? Do you think he's going to take the risk, because he knows there is one now, of standing with you? Or will he follow what he's been doing and go for the wrestling?
Serra: The wrestling is going to lead to my world anyway. I feel the last two guys he fought, I'm not going to say I'm a better fighter than them, I'm going to say I'm a better matchup for St. Pierre. I think off my back I'm going to be way more dangerous than those guys. Matt Hughes (Pictures) has one way of beating you: getting on top of you and beating you up. He's not doing nothing to you standing or elsewhere. And I feel like I can be dangerous. He gets me down, I'm interested to see what techniques he's going to come with.

Sherdog.com: What about Montreal? Is that a factor?
Serra: Not for me. I don't care. Of course I'm going to be getting booed. If he was fighting me in Madison Square Garden, I'm sure he'd be getting booed. It's not going to hurt my feelings. It's their hometown boy. OK, boo me. I'll feel like Chazz Michael Michaels from "Blades of Glory."

Sherdog.com: You're a big fan of Will Ferrell.
Serra: Yeah, you ever see "Talladega Nights"? That's where I got the whole "Frenchy" thing from. After Georges made excuses after the fight -- which he did go back on and I think apologized for, and ever since he did I didn't go after him again -- but of course when he first made excuses, not right after the fight when we were both gentlemen, but somewhere down the road, obviously I got mad so I went back at him. I really got it back from the "Talladega Nights" movie because I'm a big Will Ferrell fan. But people need to stop being so friggin uptight anyways. Who cares.

Sherdog.com: He didn't like that.
Serra: You know, I think mentally he's got to get his head where it needs to be. If he's gotta put Matt Hughes (Pictures)' head on my body, if he's gotta make me out to be the bad guy, then so be it. Whatever works for you.

Sherdog.com: He has shown the ability to come back from defeat. He lost to Hughes and came back to defeat him pretty decisively. What does that say about him?
Serra: Listen, I think he's a very talented, talented person. He's a talented athlete. I think he'd be good in any number of sports, not just MMA. As a fighter I think I pose different problems than Matt Hughes (Pictures). Matt Hughes (Pictures) or even a Frank Trigg (Pictures), just like the wrestling type guys, he's going to have an advantage over those guys. He's younger, more athletic, hard to get down. That's the reason I was such an underdog in the first place, because if I just tried to get him down and mount him and beat him up, chances are it would be a hard time. Chances are it's going to be that fight that everybody thought it might look like. But I feel I'm dangerous everywhere now. And I'm putting my time in. I know what I'm doing in sparring. I know what I'm doing in rolling. My attitude is if I pull that off in the gym. If I pull that off in the academy. I can pull that off in the fight. If I'm making these guys tap. If I'm making these guys wobble from punches. There's no reason I can't take this guy out -- strategically, not just go in there like a moron. Not just go in there and go nuts and throw the windmill at him.

Sherdog.com: How many rounds of sparring did you do?
Serra: Man, I'm definitely clocking in over 80. And it was sparring man, like some guys they spar but might not be technical. We're fighting. We're fighting every week. So you'll see when its starts going, I've been fighting.
