Sherdog’s Top 10: Wanderlei Silva Moments (Good, Bad & Ugly)

1. LIFETIME BAN

Wanderlei Silva in May 2014 ducked out on a Nevada Athletic Commission drug test ahead of his scheduled fight with Chael Sonnen at UFC 175 in Las Vegas. He later admitted to taking diuretics and dodging the test. Diuretics are banned substances, and Silva knew he was going to test positive.

The final resolution for all of this can be spun one of two ways, depending on who you are talking to. First, Silva unexpectedly retired in September -- a decision that coincided with an upcoming NAC hearing he had been ordered to attend. The commission later handed down a lifetime ban from competing in the state of Nevada, along with a $70,000 fine.

In response, Silva released a video, promising that “war is just beginning, sons of bitches.” It was horrendous yet somehow fitting way for “The Axe Murderer” to call it a career.
