Former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis knew he had a fight on his hands before he ever climbed through the Octagon’s door.

When he locked horns with Eddie Alvarez, the two tore into each for three full, grueling rounds and there wasn’t a clear-cut winner at the final horn. Pettis landed the much better strikes on the feet but the Philly fighter scored several powerful takedowns and controlled the pace. The fight was a toss-up in every round and at the end, the winner was up in the air.

In the end, two of the three ringside judges favored Alvarez’ relentless pressure and he won via split decision. The scores were 29-28 (twice) in favor of Alvarez and 29-28 for the Milwaukee fighter. Alvarez’ six takedowns were the difference.
