Shane Mosley, David Avanesyan On Weight for Welterweight Title Eliminator

Mike SloanMay 27, 2016

A few years ago Shane Mosley was an afterthought in the world of boxing. He had seen plenty of better days and had gone 1-4-1 in five fights including a knockout loss to Anthony Mundine. But “Sugar” Shane (49-9-1, 41 KOs) has had a resurgence of sorts and after winning two in a row, he finds himself in a position virtually nobody expected: in line for a world title.

On Saturday night at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, the future Hall of Famer will take on David Avanesyan in a 12-round WBA welterweight title eliminator. The winner will then face the winner of the Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter mega fight next month.

At Friday’s weigh-ins, both fighters cleared the 147-pound limit, giving their tussle the green light. Avanesyan (21-1-1, 11 KOs), the WBA “interim” champion at welterweight, tipped the scale at 146.7 pounds. Mosley, meanwhile, officially checked in at 146 pounds.

Their title eliminator will be televised live on CBS Sports Network starting at 10:30 p.m. Et/7:30 p.m. PT.
