David Bixenspan Joins Press Row

Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the Sherdog.com blog. This week, Breen is joined by “6:05 Superpodcast” host David Bixenspan.

Inspired by the ill-advised but continuously bizarre and amusing discussion of an improbable Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather showdown, Breen and Bixenspan by tribute to the silliness with a stream of consciousness discussion about some of their favorite wacky crossover bouts in MMA history. The two hypothesize the origins and purpose of the poorly photoshopped McGregor-Mayweather posters, laugh about a surreal 1994 cartoon starring Ring of Combat promoter Lou Neglia and also launch into a deep dive on Mexican pro wrestling promotions Asistencia Asesoria y Administracion and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre 's strange crossover fights with Japanese promotion Deep in 2002, which jump started the MMA career of Alberto Rodriguez, better known as Alberto del Rio or Dos Caras Jr., and also featured the likes of “El Canek” Felipe Estrada, “Super Porky” Brazo de Plata and El Solar.

After conceding this topic may require ongoing “Press Row” segments, Breen and Bixenspan also touch on New Japan Pro Wrestling's farcical flirtations with MMA, including Josh Barnett's post-steroid failure return and the beginning of another former UFC champion's career, Lyoto Machida, beginning his career as simply “RYOTO” as a potential pro wrestler under the wing of Antonio Inoki.

Grab your credential and get a seat in “Press Row.”
