Gregor Gillespie-Jason Gonzalez Lightweight Tilt Added to UFC Fight Night 116 in Pittsburgh

A lightweight battle between Gregor Gillespie and Jason Gonzalez has been added to UFC Fight Night 116. The news was first reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and UFC officials confirmed the bout on Saturday.

Unbeaten in nine pro bouts, New York’s Gillespie is among the best new contenders the UFC has at 155 pounds. “The Gift” is 2-0 inside the Octagon and is coming off a 21-second knockout of Andrew Holbrook at UFC 210 in April. Prior to his UFC run, Gillespie ran roughshod over regional opposition in the Ring of Combat promotion.
Gonzalez, meanwhile, will likely be Gillespie’s toughest test to date. The Colton, California fighter is 1-1 in the UFC and last fought on the UFC on Fox 23 card this pas January, where he submitted J.C. Cottrell via first-round brabo choke. “Nicoyas” was knocked out in the first round by Drew Dober in his Octagon debut last September.

Set for Sep. 16 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, UFC Fight Night 116 is slated to be headlined by a middleweight clash between former UFC 185-pound champion Luke Rockhold and former WSOF simultaneous middleweight and light heavyweight king David Branch. Welterweight Thiago Alves will clash with Mike Perry in the chief support bout, while elsewhere, middleweight Hector Lombard will take on Anthony Smith.
