Jones (22-1) and Cormier (17-1) first met in January of 2015, with “Bones” taking a unanimous decision. He was then stripped of the belt after being charged in an alleged hit and run incident in New Mexico.
Cormier went on to win the vacant title with a third-round submission of Anthony Johnson. The crown was successfully defended last October when the champion outpointed Alexander Gustafsson via split decision.
Jones, 28, returned from the long layoff last weekend and handedly defeated Ovince St. Preux at UFC 197, claiming the promotion’s interim 205-pound title. On July 9, the titles will be unified.
