Cheap Seats Blog: Brock Lesnar Defeats John Cena at ‘SummerSlam’ to Claim WWE Heavyweight Title

Brock Lesnar hasn’t held a world championship since being defeated by Cain Velasquez for Ultimate Fighting Championship’s heavyweight title at UFC 121 in 2010.

On Sunday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Lesnar defeated John Cena during the main event of World Wrestling Entertainment’s “Summerslam” to capture the WWE world heavyweight championship for the first time since 2003.

The former NCAA Division I Wrestling Champion has been making intermittent appearances for the professional wrestling company since returning in April of 2012, but Sunday marked his first match where the WWE strap was on the line.

With the win, the 37-year-old becomes a four-time WWE champion.

Lesnar has not competed inside the Octagon since UFC 141, losing to Alistair Overeem via technical knockout. Following the bout, Lesnar announced his retirement from MMA, mentioning his battle with diverticulitis and stating “My hat is off to [Alistair] Overeem. I’ve had a really difficult couple of years with my disease,” Lesnar said. “I’m going to officially say that tonight is the last night you will see me in the Octagon.
