A Religious Experience: UFC Exits Utah
Jake Rossen Jun 16, 2010
When Dana White imagines a day when the UFC will hold 100 events a
year around the world, I imagine a day in which quality control
takes a serious hit. MMA isn’t fast food, and there is no assembly
line for an organized UFC experience. Not unless they can clone
event coordinator Burt Watson 50 times over.
Volume leading to error is something the UFC may have gotten a taste of in Utah, where the promotion was forced to bite the bullet and port over an August 2 Versus television event to San Diego as a result of poor ticket sales. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, it was because the show was scheduled for a Sunday evening -- for the Mormons of Salt Lake City, traditionally a day of rest. Dodging blood splatter might not fit the description.
A goof, sure, but statistically insignificant compared to the UFC’s production record. But if they insist on tripling their event schedule, it’ll be the first of many.
